                Creating New Chemistry and Science

                Frontier Chemistry Research Cluster

The Departments of Material Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry conduct the education of the Kyoto University Faculty of Engineering Frontier Chemistry Course. In aiming to create a graduate program that carries the same principles of the Frontier Chemistry Course, the two departments (grouped as the Frontier Chemistry Research Cluster) will conduct a joint Masters program entrance examination.

Changes Implemented from the 2008 Academic Year Entrance Examination (conducted on August 27-28, 2007)

The five chemistry related departments of the Kyoto University Graduate School of Engineering (Departments of Material Science, Energy and Hydrocarbon Chemistry, Molecular Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, and Synthetic and Biological Chemistry) excluding the Department of Chemical Engineering had previously conducted a joint entrance exam grouped as "Chemistry I". The following are the changes made to department groupings.

Frontier Chemistry Research Cluster (Departments of Material Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry)

Advanced Chemistry Research Cluster (Departments of Energy and Hydrocarbon Chemistry, Molecular Engineering, Synthetic and Biological Chemistry)

Department of Chemical Engineering

2008 Academic Year Masters Program Admissions Guide

The following changes to the entrance examination schedule and subject content have been made by the Frontier Chemistry Research Cluster in order to allow more students to take the entrance examination.

1. Changes to the Examination Schedule

3 days changed to 2 days

2. Changes to the Examination Subjects and Contents

The former tested subjects and contents that were based on the curriculum of the Kyoto University Faculty of Engineering Department of Industrial Chemistry have been changed to subjects and contents that are in common with other university chemistry related departments nationwide. The examination schedule has also been changed to allow the completion of the written exam in one day. An oral exam will take place on the second day so it is necessary to be at the Kyoto University Katsura Campus from 8:20am on the first day and until 4:00pm on the second day.

[Exam Subjects Before the Changes]

English Language (120 minute exam)

Specialized Subjects - Fundamentals (180 minute exam)
Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry are compulsory.

Specialized Subjects - I (120 minute exam)
Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry are compulsory. Choose 2 subjects out of Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Biochemistry and Chemical Engineering.

Specialized Subjects - II (120 minute exam)
Choose 4 subjects out of Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Biochemistry and Chemical Engineering.

[Exam Subjects Following the Changes]

Entrance Exam Questions for the 2008 Academic Year

Organic Chemistry (200 point total score, 90 minute exam)
Entrance Exam Questions for the 2008 Academic Year

Specialized Subjects (200 point total score, 90 minute exam)
Entrance Exam Questions for the 2008 Academic Year

Choose two subjects out of inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, synthesis of polymers, physical properties of polymers, and biochemistry

Changes to be implemented from the 2009 Academic Year Entrance Examination (scheduled to take place on August 25-26, 2008)

For the English language exam, the combined results of a written exam and the score from the TOEIC Test will be used (200 point total). Therefore, it will be necessary to submit the Official Score Certificate (originals only) of the TOEIC Test Secure Program (SP) taken within two years from the first day of the entrance examination (taken within two years from August 25, 2008 if you are applying for admission in April 2009). (Official Score Certificates will be returned at a later date.) If the TOEIC Test Official Score Certificate is not submitted, the TOEIC portion of the total score will be given 0 points. Please take note that the TOEIC Test Institutional Program (IP) test results will not be accepted. Please read the 2009 Academic Year Masters Program Admissions Guide (scheduled to be distributed in late May 2008) for details on submitting the Official Score Certificate. Those individuals planning on taking the entrance examination for the departments in the Frontier Chemistry Research Cluster should take the TOEIC Test Secure Program (SP).
