Undergraduate Department of Industrial Chemistry General Information

Admission Policies

Ideal Student Image

  • Individuals who have a good understanding of the teachings at high school and those that have adequate capabilities to follow the studies of the Undergraduate Department of Industrial Chemistry
  • Individuals who are open-minded, think logically, and who try to solve problems on their own
  • Individuals who understand the magnificence of chemistry and or chemistry-oriented engineering, and those who have a passion to learn them

Learning Process

The Undergraduate Department of Industrial Chemistry faculty work as a team to instruct admitted students in chemistry and a wide range of chemistry-related fields, placing an importance on the acquirement of fundamental knowledge of the discipline.

First Year and Second Year First Semester

First year students will learn the fundamentals of chemistry, physics and mathematics, in addition to the general subject requirements of Kyoto University in foreign languages, humanities and social sciences. Faculty in the Undergraduate Department of Industrial Chemistry will instruct the courses in basic physical chemistry and organic chemistry.

Second year students will take specialized courses and will receive advanced education from the Department's faculty in the areas including physical chemistry, organic and inorganic chemistry, analytic chemistry and chemical process engineering.

Second Year Second Semester and Third Year

In continuation of the curriculum of the first year and half, students will take courses related to their future specialization in the Courses of Frontier Chemistry, Fundamental Industrial Chemistry and Chemical Process Engineering from the second semester of the second year. The student ratio of the above Courses is 2:3:1 (note: new curriculum first applied to students admitted in 2004).

Students in the Frontier Chemistry Course will learn research methods and the fundamental principles that govern the synthesis, structure, functions and characteristics of substances. Through these courses, they will aim to specialize in the creation of new substances that will benefit society.

Students in the Advanced Chemistry Undergraduate Course Program will learn experiment methods and the fundamental principles that govern the chemical reactions and chemical natures of substances. Through these courses, they will aim to specialize in diverse areas such as: analysis of chemical reactions and chemical natures of substances at a molecular level, synthesis of new chemical compounds, energy-related chemistry, and biological chemistry.

Students in the Chemical Process Engineering Course will learn the fundamentals of engineering in the areas of physics, mathematics and computer science, in addition to basics of chemistry. Through these courses, they will aim to specialize in a specific engineering area that quantitatively handles the transformation and transportation of energy and materials in systems that range from the molecular level to chemical processes and then on to the global environment.

Furthermore, there is also a common curriculum prepared for all courses that will enable students to obtain specialized knowledge in diverse areas.

Fourth Year

In the fourth year, students will become a member of a research laboratory and conduct specialized research for the completion of their thesis. They will deepen their knowledge and receive fundamental training as future researchers and engineers. Upon graduation, many continue on to graduate programs to deepen their knowledge in specialized areas. The departments of the graduate schools are not directly related to the above undergraduate courses. Therefore, students may apply to any of the graduate programs.
